Aude: un blessé grave dans un violent incendie, 4.000 hectares parcourus

Un incendie d’une intensité exceptionnelle dans le massif des Corbières, dans l’Aude, a fait mardi deux blessés dont un grièvement, selon la préfecture et a ravagé en quelques heures 4.000 hectares de végétation.Une personne est “en urgence absolue, gravement brûlée”, a précisé la préfecture mardi soir.Les flammes, attisées par le vent, se sont propagées de forêts en broussailles, avant d’atteindre le village de Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse, près de Caracassonne, où des maisons ont été brûlées.  Les vacanciers des campings de Lagrasse et de Fabrezan ont été évacués de façon préventive, ainsi qu’une trentaine de maisons à Tournissan, un autre village du secteur, où au moins une maison avait partiellement pris feu, de même que plusieurs jardins, où des habitants tentaient de contrer l’avancée des flammes à l’aide de tuyaux d’arrosage, a constaté un photographe de l’AFP.”Le feu se propage très rapidement, car les conditions météo sont défavorables, c’est une des zones les plus sèches du département et le vent est soutenu”, a détaillé à l’AFP la secrétaire générale de la préfecture de l’Aude, Lucie Roesch.”Sur place, ajoute-t-elle, le dispositif continue de monter en puissance. Concernant les moyens aériens, nous sommes au maximum des capacités nationales, neuf Canadair et cinq Dash, 980 pompiers sur place et 130 en renfort. C’est un sinistre d’une grande ampleur. La nuit va être longue”.Des hélicoptères bombardiers d’eau multiplient les rotations pour éviter que les flammes atteignent les habitations des villages de Lagrasse, Fabrezan, Tournissan, Coustouge, Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse, parfois en vain.- les populations doivent “rester confinées” -De nombreuses routes départementales sont fermées à la circulation pour faciliter le travail des pompiers.”L’évolution de l’incendie est défavorable. Il est demandé aux populations de rester confinées à l’intérieur de leurs habitations sauf ordre d’évacuation donné par les sapeurs-pompiers”, insiste la préfecture dans un communiqué.Le préfet de l’Aude a appelé à la prudence et à s’informer via les sources officielles, sans relayer des “fausses informations”.Le département de l’Aude était placé mardi en vigilance rouge aux feux de forêt, avec un risque “très élevé” d’incendie, alors qu’un épisode de chaleur s’installe sur le sud-ouest de la France, selon Météo-France.Depuis le début de l’été, plusieurs incendies sont intervenus dans l’Aude, département touché par la sécheresse et les fortes chaleurs. L’un d’eux, au début du mois de juillet, le plus important dans le département depuis 1986, avait parcouru 2.000 hectares et mobilisé près de 1.000 pompiers près de Narbonne.Affecté par la sécheresse et l’arrachage de vignes, qui avaient une fonction de coupe-feu et ralentissaient l’avancée des flammes, l’Aude a connu une forte augmentation des surfaces brûlées ces dernières années.”On était à 300-400 hectares par an au début des années 2000″, rappelait la semaine dernière à l’AFP Jean-Paul Baylac, en charge des Feux de forêt au Service départemental d’incendies et de secours de l’Aude.”Le vent devrait faiblir dans la nuit”, fait remarquer Lucie Roesch, espérant que la baisse d’intensité de la tramontane, qui souffle depuis le nord-ouest, cessera d’attiser les flammes.

Lebanon plans to disarm Hezbollah by year end

Death toll in Yemen migrant shipwreck tops 90

More than 90 people were killed when a migrant boat sank off Yemen’s coast, Yemeni officials and a source at the International Organization for Migration told AFP Tuesday, updating earlier tolls.The boat carrying mostly Ethiopian migrants sank on Sunday as it headed towards Abyan governorate in southern Yemen, a frequent destination for boats smuggling African migrants hoping to reach the wealthy Gulf states.Late Tuesday, a Yemeni source at UN agency the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said that two bodies, which were initially buried by local fishermen after they washed up on the beach and began rotting, had been recovered.This has taken the toll of confirmed deaths from the shipwreck to 96.Earlier a Yemeni security source and a local official in Abyan said 94 bodies had been recovered and most of them had been buried, with the local official saying corpses were still washing up on the shore.A journalist collaborating with AFP saw at least two corpses washed up on the shore, near the area where the ship sank.He also saw worn-out tents and African people being trucked out of the remote area from which smugglers operate.Authorities said security forces and government allies in Abyan carried out a sweep against camp sites for migrants on the coast, operated by smugglers.Abyan’s province top security official, Brigadier General Ali Nasser Buzaid, said the dead included men and women.Local authorities and the IOM said the boat was carrying around 200 people.On Monday, two Yemeni security officials told AFP that 32 people were rescued and dozens were still missing.Despite the civil war that has ravaged Yemen since 2014, the impoverished country has remained a key transit point for irregular migration, in particular from Ethiopia which itself has been roiled by ethnic conflict.strs/aya/ami

The United States is rushing to put nuclear power reactors on the Moon and Mars, and hopes to launch the first system by the end of the decade.A new NASA directive — first reported by Politico and seen by AFP on Tuesday — calls for the appointment of a nuclear power czar to select two commercial proposals within six months, framing the push as crucial to outpacing a joint Chinese-Russian effort.Signed by acting NASA chief Sean Duffy, who is also US transportation secretary, the July 31 memo is the latest sign of the agency’s shift towards prioritizing human space exploration over scientific research under President Donald Trump’s second term.”Since March 2024, China and Russia have announced on at least three occasions a joint effort to place a reactor on the Moon by the mid-2030s,” it says. “The first country to do so could potentially declare a keep-out zone which would significantly inhibit the United States from establishing a planned Artemis presence if not there first.”The idea of using nuclear energy off-planet is not new.Since 2000, NASA has invested $200 million towards developing small, lightweight fission power systems, though none have progressed towards flight readiness, according to the directive.The most recent effort came in 2023 with the completion of three $5 million industry study contracts that focused on generating 40 kilowatts of power, enough to continuously run 30 households for ten years.Unlike solar power, fission systems can operate around the clock — invaluable during the weeks-long lunar nights or Martian dust storms.Advances in technology have made such systems increasingly compact and lightweight. NASA formally committed to using nuclear power on Mars in December 2024 — the first of seven key decisions necessary for human exploration of the Red Planet.Based on feedback by industry, surface power needs should be at least 100 kilowatts to support “long-term human operations including in-situ resource utilization,” meaning things like life support, communications, and mining equipment to collect surface ice. It assumes the use of a “heavy class lander” that carries up to 15 metric tons of mass, and targets a “readiness to launch by the first quarter of FY30,”  meaning late 2029.NASA’s Artemis program to return to the Moon and establish a lasting presence near the south pole has faced repeated delays. The timeline for Artemis 3, the first planned crewed landing, has slipped to 2027, a date few see as realistic given the planned lander, SpaceX’s Starship, is far from ready.China meanwhile is targeting 2030 for its first crewed mission and has proven more adept at meeting its deadlines in recent years.

Cathy et Patrick aiment raconter comment ils se sont trouvés: grâce à un message laissé dans un carnet rouge au sommet d’une montagne suisse. “C’était une super jolie manière de se rencontrer”, se remémore Cathy Rotzetter, lors d’une récente randonnée sur les hauteurs du canton de Fribourg, dans l’ouest du pays alpin. Lassée des sites de rencontres en ligne, cette femme de 58 ans a été séduite par une alternative analogique avec une touche toute suisse et déjà surnommée “Tinder des montagnes”, en référence à la célèbre application de rencontres numérique. Cathy a franchi le pas en octobre dernier. Après avoir grimpé jusqu’au sommet de la Wandflue, qui culmine à 2.133 mètres, elle a mis un mot accompagné de ses coordonnées dans le carnet rouge trouvé là-haut. Neuf mois plus tard, elle est assise dans un pâturage, le bras enroulé autour de Patrick, la Wandflue en toile de fond. “Dans le carnet j’ai noté que j’aimais bien faire la marche tranquille, mais que j’aimais bien l’apéro après l’effort”, raconte t-elle à l’AFP en riant. Patrick, qui a le même âge que Cathy et qui préfère ne donner que son prénom, a gravi la montagne une semaine plus tard. une fois au sommet, il a été charmé par le mot de Cathy. – “On sera deux” -Tout est parti d’un moment de solitude au sommet de la Dent de Broc, qui du haut de ses 1.829 mètres surplombe le pittoresque lac de Gruyère. Un pari entre amis a fait le reste.Thibaud Monney est un randonneur passionné de 29 ans et c’est en contemplant le magnifique paysage du haut de la Dent de Broc qu’il a réalisé qu’il aimerait partager ses sensations avec quelqu’un.Sur un coup de tête, il a couché ses pensées dans un carnet relié en cuir que l’on trouve traditionnellement sur les sommets du canton de Fribourg pour que les randonneurs puissent y laisser trace de leur passage. “J’étais monté pour le coucher de soleil et j’étais tout seul, la prochaine fois on sera deux”, avait alors écrit le jeune homme. “J’ai mis mon numéro de téléphone, une personne m’a contacté”, rapporte t-il. Les collègues de Thibaud Monney, formateur en menuiserie pour personnes handicapées, lui ont suggéré en plaisantant de placer des carnets dédiés sur les sommets des montagnes. “Cela a bien fonctionné”, explique t-il lors d’une récente randonnée au sommet de La Vudalla, une crête qui du haut de ses 1.670 mètres offre une vue sublime sur la Gruyère (la région d’où vient le célèbre fromage).”Plusieurs couples se sont formés grâce à ces carnets”, dit-il en feuilletant celui qu’il a placé juste à côté du traditionnel livre des visiteurs, tous deux abrités des intempéries dans une boîte en métal fixée à une grande croix en bois. Thibaud Monney a déposé des carnets sur sept sommets du canton de Fribourg, mais l’idée fait son chemin et les carnets d’amour se trouvent sur des montagnes dans le reste de la Suisse et parfois beaucoup plus loin, jusqu’en Argentine.- La nature, “un bon filtre” -Thibaud Monney dit sa fierté en entendant parler des couples qui se sont rencontrés grâce à cette initiative. “Très souvent, il y a des messages de remerciement d’avoir créé cela. Quand quelqu’un peut trouver l’amour, a fait une rencontre amicale grâce aux carnets, c’est clair que j’ai rendu quelqu’un heureux”, dit-il. Le carnet de La Vudalla confirme l’engouement et se remplit rapidement. “Passionné de montagnes, de ski et d’escalade”, dit sobrement l’un des messages à côté d’un autre à la recherche plus spécifique d’une âme soeur qui “aime le sport, le métal et les femmes tatouées”. Contrairement aux algorithmes de plus en plus complexes utilisés pour les rencontres en ligne, le filtre du carnet rouge “est très simple”.”Si vous contactez quelqu’un, cette personne a aussi atteint le sommet, et elle aime probablement la nature et les montagnes. Vous avez déjà quelque chose en commun”, explique Thibaud Monney.Cathy Rotzetter est du même avis. “L’amour partagé de la nature… est un bon filtre”, dit-elle.Thibaud Monney a délaissé les sites de rencontres en ligne dont il n’aimait pas le “swipe”.Pour autant, le choix des sommets est aussi un moyen de faire un premier tri en fonction de l’âge et des capacités physiques. Si La Vudalla est l’une des randonnées les plus accessibles seuls les randonneurs plus aguerris et au mieux de leur forme pourront arriver jusqu’au carnet rouge du Vanil de l’Ecri, à 2.376 mètres. Thibaud Monney lui-même a trouvé une compagne, mais sans l’aide de ses carnets.”Elle m’a vu à la télévision” parler du “Tinder des montagnes” et “a pris contact” et “maintenant, je suis heureux”.
