Ukraine Recap: Russia Sending Chechens, Convicts to Fill Gaps

Russia is preparing to send more Chechen fighters and convicts to Ukraine to fill holes left by Wagner mercenaries that were pulled from the battlefield as intense fighting continued along the frontline.

(Bloomberg) — Russia is preparing to send more Chechen fighters and convicts to Ukraine to fill holes left by Wagner mercenaries that were pulled from the battlefield as intense fighting continued along the frontline.

Kremlin forces risk being overstretched as Ukraine has reported advances toward the embattled eastern city of Bakhmut, according to European intelligence officials who asked not to be identified because the information isn’t public. Russia’s deployment of troops to Bakhmut left shortages in other occupied areas in Ukraine’s south, the officials said.

Ukraine’s central bank, increasingly confident of a recovering wartime economy, is preparing to ease restrictions imposed after the Russian invasion. Last week it approved a strategy to transition to a flexible exchange rate and return to an inflation-targeting approach to monetary policy.
