(Bloomberg) — Mexico’s tourist inflows have surpassed pre-pandemic levels, giving a boost to a key industry at a time the economy is still recovering.
Almost 6.1 million visitors entered the country in November, a 22% increase compared with the previous year, the nation’s statistics institute said on Tuesday. The number of international travelers who stayed in Mexico for at least one night beyond the border regions — a key metric that removes quick back-and-forth crossings — reached 22.4 million in the first 11 months of the year, a record since the institute started to publish the data in 2018.
Mexico’s popular beach destinations, including Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, experienced a spike of international tourists arriving by plane last year compared with 2021 as the coronavirus pandemic subsided, according to a study by the University of Anahuac’s tourism research center.
