(Bloomberg) — Phoenix temperatures have hit 110F degrees or higher for the 19th day in a row on Tuesday, setting a record for the longest streak with heat at those extremes.Â
The previous record was 18 days set in 1974, according to the National Weather Service. It’s likely the record streak will be extended this week, with forecasts calling for a high of 115 Wednesday, 116 Thursday and 116 on Friday.Â
The southern US has baked under a blistering dome of heat for weeks that has toppled records around the region, imperiled human life and taxed energy grids. In addition to high temperatures, Phoenix has also set record for low temperatures that failed to drop below 90F degrees.
