(Bloomberg) — US Senator Robert Menendez from New Jersey was indicted by federal prosecutors over bribery offenses in connection with his relationship with three businessmen.
The indictment in a US court in New York alleges that Menendez and his wife engaged in a “corrupt relationship” with three New Jersey associates and businessmen to accept hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from at least 2018 up until about 2022. Authorities seized cash and gold bars from the Senator’s home and bank, according to the indictment.
Menendez, the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, has been under investigation for his interactions with IS EG Halal of Egypt and its founder Wael Hana. The company, with offices in Edgewater, New Jersey, is the only authorized importer of halal meat to Egypt.
A representative from Menendez’s office didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.
Federal prosecutors in New York have investigated gifts given to Menendez’s wife, Nadine Arslanian Menendez, who married the senator in 2020.
