(Bloomberg) — Iranian naval vessels tried to seize two oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz early on Wednesday, AP reported.

The Iranian forces fired shots but didn’t cause any casualties or major damage, it said, citing US Navy Fifth Fleet Spokesman Tim Hawkins.

The US Navy then responded to distress signals and the Iranian ships backed off, the report added.

Iran has seized at least three oil tankers in the waterway this year, a key transit route for oil exports from the Persian Gulf.
