(Bloomberg) — Kamau Marshall, a former chief campaign spokesman for Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign, moved from the US Trade Representative to the Education Department this week.
Marshall on Tuesday became a senior adviser to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona in the agency’s office of communication and outreach. He was previously deputy assistant for media and public affairs at USTR, where he focused on regions including Africa, China and Europe as well as industrial sectors such as agriculture and textiles, among others.
He was Biden’s director of strategic communications on his 2020 run, where he worked closely with then-Louisiana Representative Cedric Richmond, Biden’s 2020 campaign co-chair.
Marshall will focus on issues regarding kindergarten to 12th grade at the Education Department, as well as higher education and student debt relief and oversight.
Biden’s plan to forgive student debt, estimated to cost as much as $400 billion, drew sharp criticism from Republicans who are likely to wield their fresh majority in the House to increase scrutiny of the measure and other Biden administration policies.
The debt relief program has already been held up over a legal challenge by six Republican-led states. Late last year, the US Supreme Court agreed to hear arguments in the case, and declined to lift an appeals court decision blocking the program, which would forgive as much as $20,000 in federal loans for certain borrowers making less than $125,000 per year, or $250,000 for households.
