(Bloomberg) — A powerful explosion in the city of San Cristobal in the Dominican Republic has left at least 11 dead, 11 missing and 52 injured, the city’s mayor, Jose Montas, told Listin Diario newspaper Tuesday.
The local fire department said it was still trying to control the blaze that started Monday afternoon in an industrial and commercial sector. Authorities didn’t immediately give a reason for the blast, which toppled buildings, crushed cars and forced the evacuation of hundreds of people in the city, which is about 17 miles southwest of capital Santo Domingo.
President Luis Abinader said the administration would work with local authorities to make sure the area “recovered completely.”
