Dutch continue gas drilling at small Warffum field until 2032

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – The Dutch government on Friday said it had extended the permit for gas drilling at the relatively small Warffum field in the north of the Netherlands to 2032.

The field is close to, but not connected to, the massive Groningen field, where production has permanently been halted due to seismic risks.

The government’s mining safety adviser said drilling at Warffum could continue safely, as it had no effect on seismic activity which still results from the exploitation of the Groningen field.

The Warffum field holds around 1 billion cubic metres of natural gas, according to gas company NAM.
