(Bloomberg) — Will Hurd dropped out of the 2024 Republican presidential race and threw his support behind former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley.
Hurd, a former Texas congressman and outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump, urged candidates to rally around Haley in his statement Monday released on X, formerly Twitter.
“It is important to recognize the realities of the political landscape and the need to consolidate our party around one person to defeat both Donald Trump and President Biden,” he said, warning that “otherwise, we will repeat the same errors as in 2016.”
Hurd touted Haley’s foreign policy bona fides at a moment when issues ranging from continued aid to Ukraine and Hamas’s attack on Israel portend to draw more attention in the GOP primaries.
“America is at a crossroads and it’s time to come together and make Joe Biden a one-term president,” Haley said in a post on X that also thanked Hurd for his support.

In the crowded GOP field, Hurd ranked last, garnering just 0.2% support from Republican primary voters, according to FiveThirtyEight‘s GOP presidential polling average. He did not participate in either of the Republican debates after failing to meet the criteria.
“When I first entered the Republican presidential primary field in June, I knew I was a dark horse candidate with a path to victory that would contain many obstacles,“ Hurd said in a statemen. “But as I traveled across the country, I met so many Americans who believed in my campaign’s message of unity and common sense.”
