(Bloomberg) — New York Republican Brandon Williams is experiencing an unspecified complication from recent heart bypass surgery and will miss the remainder of US House votes this week, his office announced Wednesday.
The former Navy officer, 56, is being treated by physicians from George Washington University Hospital in Washington.
“Doctors are pleased with the pace of the Congressman’s recovery from his surgery,” Williams spokesperson Taylor Weyeneth said in a statement. “No further comment will be given at this time to respect the privacy of the Congressman and his family.”
Williams’ absence complicates anticipated votes on spending bills this week for Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who can’t afford more than five GOP defections on any legislation that Democrats oppose.
Williams represents a central New York area carried by President Joe Biden in 2020 that some independent analysts view as competitive heading into the 2024 elections — one of a cluster of New York state districts they say could decide party control of the House.
