(Bloomberg) — Thaksin Shinawatra, a former Thai prime minister who’s lived in self-imposed exile for 15 years, will return to the Southeast Asian nation on Aug. 10, as a coalition of pro-democracy parties struggle to take power after nearly a decade of military-backed rule.
Thaksin, who turned 74 on Wednesday, will arrive in Bangkok via the Don Muang airport, his youngest daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra, said in an Instagram post. She is among the three prime ministerial candidates of Pheu Thai party, which Thaksin backs and is now leading an effort to form a new government.
Thaksin has lived overseas since fleeing the country in 2008, before being sentenced in several graft cases. He has previously missed several pledges to return to Thailand.
