AMLO Slams Texas Governor Over Floating Barriers in the Rio Grande

Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott for installing buoys in the Rio Grande to prevent migrants from swimming across the border.

(Bloomberg) — Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott for installing buoys in the Rio Grande to prevent migrants from swimming across the border.

AMLO, as the president is known, called for Mexican voters living in the US to avoid voting for Abbott and his Republican Party, given the politician’s support for such measures. Abbott is not up for reelection for a fourth term until 2026.

The president has previously criticized Abbott over Texas’ border measures, including inspections of Mexican merchandise in vehicles at the border. Foreign Affairs Minister Alicia Barcena said last week that Mexico plans to conduct a study on where the buoys are placed, to determine if they are at any point crossing into Mexican territory.
