(Bloomberg) — Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said he will leave politics after his coalition government fell on Friday amid infighting over migration policy.
Rutte, who was still facing a vote of no confidence in parliament following the resignation of his government, made the announcement as he addressed Dutch lawmakers in The Hague on Monday.
Rutte’s government abruptly collapsed on Friday after he gave his coalition partners an ultimatum to limit the right to family reunions for refugees from war zones earlier last week. As the country’s longest serving Prime Minister, he staked the fate of his fourth cabinet on it.Â
Rutte’s job was on the line as he prepared for a no-confidence vote in The Hague. Some of his former coalition partners were considering voting to oust him, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named discussing private conversations.
