Finnish Cabinet Talks Stumble Over Disagreement on Immigration

Finnish talks to form a government were thrown into disarray after a junior partner decided not to accept a proposal on immigration policy that was already agreed by other parties.

(Bloomberg) — Finnish talks to form a government were thrown into disarray after a junior partner decided not to accept a proposal on immigration policy that was already agreed by other parties.

The Swedish People’s Party wants to continue talks and to make changes to the proposal that was approved by the three other political parties as talks on the issue of accepting foreigners ended “prematurely,” its leader Anna-Maja Henriksson told reporters in Helsinki on Saturday.

“We want to continue the talks on this particular proposal and make some changes to it,” Henriksson said. “We believe what we are proposing is something that the other parties can also accept. “

The talks were teetering on the brink after Swedish People’s Party on Friday held off on agreeing to a common policy line on immigration and climate. Its response is likely to complicate and further delay the government formation as the prospective coalition would fall short of parliamentary majority without that party and would have to invite another political force into the negotiations.
