Skies Likely Crowded Over Memorial Day Holiday Period, US Says

Airline flights are set to jump 4.5% over a seven-day period for the Memorial Day holiday starting next week, the industry’s chief federal regulator estimates, up from a year ago but still below the pre-pandemic levels of 2019.

(Bloomberg) — Airline flights are set to jump 4.5% over a seven-day period for the Memorial Day holiday starting next week, the industry’s chief federal regulator estimates, up from a year ago but still below the pre-pandemic levels of 2019.

The Federal Aviation Administration is forecasting 312,849 commercial airline flights during the traditional kickoff to the busy summer travel season, up from 299,513 last year, an agency spokesperson said in an email late Wednesday. May 25 is expected to be the busiest day of the period with 51,194 flights scheduled.

The travel period runs from May 24 through May 30. US airlines operated 321,158 flights over the holiday in 2019. Higher fares and concerns over inflation and economic slowing haven’t discouraged travel, the airlines have said.
