(Bloomberg) — Two 44-year-old men died after a shooting in a production hall at Mercedes-Benz AG’s Sindelfingen factory outside Stuttgart, with one of the victims succumbing to his wounds in hospital, according to local police.
The alleged assailant — a 53-year-old man — was arrested, police said Thursday in a statement. They are still investigating the motives.
Mercedes said the victims and the perpetrator were employees of an external service provider. There’s no risk to the public and other employees are now safe, Mercedes and the police said.
Auto factories in Germany are well-secured, with entry highly controlled. Incidents of any kind are extremely rare.
Sindelfingen is one of Mercedes’ largest factories worldwide and produces upscale cars like the S-Class luxury sedan.
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic news from Sindelfingen,” Mercedes said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and all colleagues on site.”
