(Bloomberg) — The US and Turkey discussed Ankara’s efforts to ensure a renewal of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which allows Ukraine to ship crops from three ports.

Russian forces are trying to capture Bakhmut from several directions and to encircle it, but the fighting for the city is not over, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar said.

A Russian fighter jet collided with a US surveillance drone in international airspace above the Black Sea, causing the American aircraft to crash, the Pentagon said. Russia’s defense ministry denied the US claim. The US European command said the Su-27 warplane struck the propeller of the MQ-9 Reaper drone.

US and Turkey Talk About Grain Deal in Washington (8:10 a.m.)

The US and Turkey discussed shared concerns regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Ankara’s efforts to ensure a renewal of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, according to a White House readout of a meeting in Washington between US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and his Turkish counterpart Ibrahim Kalin.

The agreement, which ensures safe passage of crop exports from three ports, has enabled Ukraine to ship out more than 24 million tons since it was sealed in July, helping drive down food-commodity costs that had soared to a record after Russia’s invasion initially disrupted trade flows. 

Fighting for Bakhmut Continues as Russia Tries to Encircle the City (8 a.m.)

Russian forces are trying to capture Bakhmut from several directions and to encircle it, but the fighting for the city is not over, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar said on television late Tuesday. Fighting also continues around other settlements in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, though Bakhmut is the epicenter, she said.

Attempts to reach the administrative borders of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions remain the main focus of Russian forces, Ukraine’s General Staff said in its morning update on Facebook.

The US wants to extradite a Russian national it says supplied American-made chips to defense contractors in Russia, despite sanctions, a Bloomberg report showed.
