(Bloomberg) — US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the Biden administration and its allies are working to isolate Russia at the global body, and called for reform to the Security Council to blunt Moscow’s impact.
The US has tried to make progress in some areas, such as getting humanitarian aid into Syria, but has been stymied on issues such as Ukraine and North Korea, Thomas-Greenfield said in an interview at Bloomberg’s Washington headquarters on Wednesday.
“It’s a relationship that is, I would say, tense,” Thomas-Greenfield said of interactions with Russia and China on the Security Council.
Thomas-Greenfield said the Security Council, which consists of five permanent members and 10 rotating members, must have additional members to counter Russia’s ability to use its veto to derail other nations’ initiatives.
“We have to find a path forward,” Thomas-Greenfield said. “It’s time for reform.”
