The Arizona Coyotes are inching closer to building a new stadium in the Phoenix area after team owner Alex Meruelo executed a letter of intent to purchase land in Mesa to develop a sports and entertainment district.
(Bloomberg) — The Arizona Coyotes are inching closer to building a new stadium in the Phoenix area after team owner Alex Meruelo executed a letter of intent to purchase land in Mesa to develop a sports and entertainment district.
“In addition to this property in Mesa, the Club will continue to explore other potential sites in the East Valley,” the club said in a statement Wednesday.
In May, voters in Tempe defeated three propositions that would have paved the way for the Coyotes to build a $2.1 billion sports-and-entertainment complex on a brownfield site. The rejection at the ballot box cast doubt on whether the team would remain in Arizona.

Mesa is a suburb east of Phoenix, located about a half-hour drive from downtown.
The Coyotes currently play at Mullett Arena at Arizona State University, a 5,000 seat facility and by far the smallest capacity of any arena in the National Hockey League.
