TSMC Takes Precautions as Super Typhoon Moves Closer to Taiwan

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the main chipmaker for Apple Inc. and Nvidia Corp., said it’s taking routine precautions at all its fabs in Taiwan as super typhoon Doksuri moves toward the island.

(Bloomberg) — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the main chipmaker for Apple Inc. and Nvidia Corp., said it’s taking routine precautions at all its fabs in Taiwan as super typhoon Doksuri moves toward the island.

The measures being taken include “24-hour on-duty personnel and emergency response teams, including water, electricity, mechanical and disaster recovery experts,” the company said in an emailed response to inquiries.

Other steps taken include:

  • Inspections of drainage systems and waterproof gates
  • Carrying out pump inventory testing
  • Minimizing use of temporary installations exposed to strong winds

TSMC is the world’s leading maker of high-performance computer chips, and has a reputation for reliable production despite its base on an island that’s prone to earthquakes and typhoons.

Taiwan has already raised sea and land warnings for the storm, which is currently affecting the northern Philippines. Doksuri is expected to affect Taiwan and China later this week.

“I have specifically asked government ministries to prepare for the typhoon,” Taiwan’s Premier Chen Chien-jen said in a post on Facebook Monday. “Let’s work together at the central and local levels to minimize the impact and damage,” he said, noting that Taiwan hasn’t seen a typhoon landfall for nearly four years.
