Romania Tells Russia to Reduce Bucharest Embassy Staff by Half

Romania demanded Russia halve the number of employees at its embassy in Bucharest, saying it needs to match the level of staffing at Romania’s own mission in Moscow.

(Bloomberg) — Romania demanded Russia halve the number of employees at its embassy in Bucharest, saying it needs to match the level of staffing at Romania’s own mission in Moscow.

Russia will need to withdraw 40 people from its embassy, including diplomats, as well as technical and administrative workers, the Romanian Foreign Ministry said in an emailed statement Thursday.

“The decision reflects the current — drastically reduced — level of diplomatic relations between the two countries after Russia started a war of aggression against Ukraine,” the ministry said in the statement.

Should Russia fail to meet a 30-days deadline, Romania will start revoking the accreditation of certain diplomats and embassy workers.

Moscow will make an appropriate response to the decision, the state-run Tass news service said, citing the Russian Foreign Ministry.
