(Bloomberg) — The Swiss government approved the start of negotiations on enhancing its bilateral trade agreement with the UK.
Switzerland wants negotiations “for an agreement that is as extensive as possible” to begin by summer, the Bern-based body said Wednesday in a statement.
“The aim of the agreement is to ensure non-discriminatory market access in various areas that are of importance for the Swiss economy,” it said. “It should also contribute to consolidating legal certainty for economic exchange and cooperation between Switzerland and the UK, and to facilitating sustainable development.”
The UK is one of Switzerland’s most important trade partners, ranking third in services and in the top 10 for goods, the government said.
The decision to start talks requires consultation from parliament and the body representing the cantons.
