More Ambulance Workers Join Mass Strike Day at UK Health Service

Britain’s state-run health service is set for its worst ever day of industrial action after another union announced 10 more strike dates.

(Bloomberg) — Britain’s state-run health service is set for its worst ever day of industrial action after another union announced 10 more strike dates.

The Unite union said ambulance workers will walk out in parts of England and Wales on a string of dates over the next two months, including Feb. 6 when they’ll join nurses and emergency staff represented by other labor groups.

Ambulance workers from the GMB union had already said they’d strike on that day alongside members of the Royal College of Nursing.

The dispute centers around pay, with unions demanding raises that counter the UK’s rate of inflation which remains above 10%. Ministers have argued that steep pay hikes risk embedding inflation and say they’ve followed advice from pay review bodies.

“The resolution to this dispute is in the government’s hands,” said Onay Kasab, Unite’s national lead officer. “This dispute will only be resolved when it enters into proper negotiations.”

Ambulance workers are next due to strike on Jan. 23 as previously announced.
