(Bloomberg) — UK Foreign Office Minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan met on Tuesday with lawyers for Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai, who’s in prison after being found guilty of fraud in October by a court in the former British territory.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s spokesman, Max Blain, told reporters in London on Tuesday that the British government had “been clear that the Hong Kong authorities must end their targeting of pro-democracy” dissidents including Lai, and that will the UK will “always support rights and freedoms and the rule of law.”

The UK “has provided support to Jimmy Lai for some time,” and Trevelyan has met his legal team “today,” Blain said.  Lai, the founder of Next Digital Ltd., had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
